Singaperumal Koil Sri Ugra Narasimhar

Singaperumal Koil is about 25 kms from Tambaram and the temple is just 100 meters off the GST Road.

The village itself is named after the deity of this temple. The main deity here is Lord Narasimhar. This is a beautiful rock cut temple. The temple and even the deity is carved out of a small hillock. Here the Lord is known as Sri Paatalaadri Narasimhar. In Sanskrit Paatalaadri means a reddish hill. The original name of this place itself is Paatalaadripuram.

According to temple sources, this temple has been referred in Brahmaanda Puraanam. Lord Vishnu took the form (Avataar) of Sri Narasimha and killed the demon king Hiranyakasipu. At the time of Narasimha Avataar, this place was surrounded by dense forests. A sage called ‘Jaapaali’ was performing Thapas, praying Lord Vishnu. As wished by him, the Lord gave dharshan to him in the form of Ugra (fierce) Narasimhar.

The main sanctum itself is a rock cut shrine on which the deity too is carved out of the hill itself. So, whoever wants to circumambulate around the temple has to actually go around the small hillock as Giri Pradhakshinam. Hence, Giri Pradhakshinam is very popular here.

There are Bali Peetams seen at certain directions, while going around the temple.

The main deity is seen here as Ugra (fierce) murthy, holding Paanchajanya (conch) and Sudharsana Chakra, showing Abhaya Hastha in one of His hands. Sri Narasimha Swamy here has 3 eyes and the third eye is shown by the priest while performing Haarathi.

The Goddess here is Sri Ahobila Valli Thaayaar. There is a separate shrine for Lord Vishnu too.

The Urchavar here is called Sri Prahalaadha Varadhar.

While walking around the temple, there is an Azhinjal tree in this temple, which is considered most sacred. It is said that this tree has mentions in the ‘Naachiyaar Thirumozhi’ composed by Sri Aandaal. People praying for marriage or children tie a small piece of thread from their clothes on the branches of this tree. By doing this with a wish, it is believed that their wishes are granted.

Sri Anjaneyar (Hanuman) is seen on the pillar adjacent to Dwajasthambha, where many people light Ghee lamps for the God.

While entering into the street of this temple, there are 4 pillars welcoming us, which look too ancient having beautiful sculptures.

The Theertham for this temple is called Suddha Pushkarani and Sthala Viruksham is Paarijaatham.

This is because I have not adhered to their conditions. They threaten me.My inlaws does not allow my wife to take a decision. They impose their decisions on her.Not sure why they are doing this. They have taken all her jewellery which I had gven and sold it off. I do not want anything from them but they should not meddle in our life .They should allow us to live and take care of our daughter. May god Narshimha help me.

  16. thanks for your wonderful guidance and information.after a lapse of more than 20 years though living in chennai i have planned to visit on this weekend with family and pray Lord narasimha to get his blessings. What I would like to know is that Is there any special significance for lighting ghee lamp in front of Lord hanumaar? If some body could throw light it would be definitely helpful. Another thing I wonder is that why girivalam is not very popular like tiruvannamalai? due to lack of publicity ?

  17. hi siva,
It is believed that not only in front of anjaneya, you should also light a ghee lamp in front of ugranarasimha & one in front of the wish tree. If you have serious wish continue these three lamps & pray to lord narasimha continuously for four weeks preferably saturdays . On the fifth week you will definitely see that your wish is fulfilled.

  19. We live far away from our home land - in USA. We would love to visit this beautiful temple. But I have lots of health problems. Do I have to climb the hill or can the car go to the entrance of the temple? It is very important for me to know this before we plan our trip. I would appreciate your quick reply. You are doing a great service by writing about these beautiful temples. I read about Sholingapuram also. But that is ruled out because one has to climb 1000 steps to have darshan of the lord. Thanks so much.

    2. I have visited both Sholingapuram and this Singaperumal temples. Singaperumal temple does not have any steps nor you need to climb on any hill. It is only when you want to do a Pradhakshina, you will have to climb some 30 - 40 steps.
If you really wish to visit Sholingapuram Yoga Narasimha, then you can very well do that also. There are DOLLY services for some 1000 INR.. People will lift you on Dolly and climb the whole hill and then drop you down...

  20. He will lead you to Him when you really need Him. There is no need to worry.
I was jobless before 9 years. I was on the way back from Sriperumbudhur travelling to Chengalpattu. It was a blessing in disguise I got down at Singaperumal Koil. On enquiry someone told me that there is temple there. Till then I had not known there was a temple in this small town. Now, after 9 years I still remember that day. He has been there with me in all my endeavors along with my Guru and my Lord Narayana.
